Paw Paw Festival
But what is a Pawpaw?
If you’re lucky, America’s best secret fruit might be growing on a tree close to your backyard. Pawpaw trees, the largest edible fruit trees native to North America, produce greenish-blackish fruit, usually three to six inches long. The flesh is pale to bright yellow and contains a network of glossy, dark brown seeds. A pawpaw’s flavor is sunny, electric, and downright tropical: a riot of mango-banana-citrus that’s incongruous with its temperate, deciduous forest origins. They also have a subtle kick of a yeasty, floral aftertaste a bit like unfiltered wheat beer.
The star of this Festival is one of Delaware’s native trees, the Pawpaw. This event features a wide array of activities, such as live music, local food trucks, folk artist vendors and demonstrations (like mine), guest speakers and guided hikes. The main theme of the event is our area’s unique pawpaw tree, which supports our park’s ecosystem and happens to produce the largest native and edible fruit in North America! The participants have a chance to taste the pawpaw fruit pulp, buy pawpaw trees and learn about them through our guest speakers. I’ll be demonstrating a simple bookmaking process from 1-2 PM. Come on out and join us for a super fun festival. This family friendly event is FREE with paid park admission.
